Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Residents Recognized at the Georgia Chapter of American College of Physicians Conference

Athens, Ga. (October 17, 2024) – Piedmont Athens Regional medical residents recently presented research they completed at the Georgia Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP) conference held in Savannah, Ga., with nine winning first, second, or third place for their presentations and clinical vignettes, making the Piedmont Athens team the most decorated program in Georgia.  

Anis Abobaker, M.D., Fawwad Ansari, M.D., and Jan Camille Ozaeta, M.D., won first place for their quality improvement research podium presentations. Samuel Dadzie, M.D. placed second and Elizabeth Soladoye, M.D., placed third in the same category, and Stanley Atencah, M.D., placed second for his podium presentation of a clinical vignette.

Raheem Robertson, M.D. received first place for his quality improvement research poster presentation. Neaam Al-Bahadili, M.D., and Patrick Berchie, M.D., placed second in the poster presentation clinical vignette. Residents Stefan Gafoor, M.D., Patrick Berchie, M.D., and Sammudeen Ibrahim, M.D. competed in the Resident Jeopardy competition, placing third in the finals overall.  

The ACP has more than 150,000 internal medicine specialists and subspecialists members worldwide. The organization allows for the sharing of knowledge and education helping internal medicine physicians better diagnose and treat adults with various health-related concerns and complex illnesses.

The Piedmont Athens Regional Graduate Medical Education (GME) program is grounded in science, respectful of the needs and values of each individual, and responsive to the needs of the communities served. There are currently 63 internal medicine residents and 10 transitional year residents in the GME program.

Residents participate in research and scholarly activities, many of which are focused on quality improvement initiatives to help improve patients' health. Recent research and presentation topics have included improving transitions of care, advanced care planning, osteoporosis screening, carotid ultrasound, and transthoracic echocardiogram in ischemic stroke work-up, hypertension, and diabetic retinopathy.
