Neuroscience Floors Open at Piedmont Atlanta
On January 10, Piedmont transported ten patients to the newly-opened Neuro Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on the 5th floor of the Marcus Tower and opened two additional patient beds on January 17. In the near future, the Neuro Science ICU will have the capacity to treat 22 patients, allowing us to better meet the needs of our community and the state.
Patients receiving care in the Neuro ICU are often postoperative and recovering from procedures like craniotomies, clot retrievals, and brain aneurysm clippings and coilings. Other patients are being treated for the effects of seizure disorders and brain tumors.
For these patients, the combination of the right doctors, the latest technology and the best techniques, can make all the difference in their chances of survival. Donor support has been used to purchase state of the art temperature management systems, external ventricular devices, ventilators for respiratory management, and devices that measure brain oxygenation and pressure. These necessary tools allow our skilled staff the ability to provide high-level specialty care and comprehensive services to medically fragile neurology patients in a comfortable, supportive environment.
On February 15, we opened our 28-bed acute care Neurology unit on the 14th floor of the Marcus Tower. "These new patient care units allow us to continue fulfilling our vision to provide state of the art neurosciences care across the state.,” says Chris Lloyd, President of the Piedmont Clinic. “Thanks to the generosity of our donors, Piedmont can put the right tools in the hands of the best clinicians, who provide the highest quality care to our patients."
