William Blincoe, M.D. Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Atlanta, Ga. (December 18, 2024) – William A. Blincoe, M.D., of Piedmont Heart Institute, was honored with the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Georgia Chapter’s 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award for his commitment to cardiovascular advances. The award was presented to Dr. Blincoe at the Georgia ACC Foundation’s Annual Meeting in November.

Dr. Blincoe has been a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology since 1985, and is a proud founding member of the Georgia ACC Foundation, which is now in its 19th year.

"Dr. Blincoe truly exemplifies dedication and leadership and has spent his career making a positive difference for those with cardiovascular disease, finding advances in treatment and being a mentor to his colleagues, while helping to transform Piedmont into a national destination for healthcare" said David Kandzari, M.D., Chief of Piedmont Heart Institute and the Cardiovascular Service Line; Director, Interventional Cardiology of the Piedmont Heart Institute; and Chief Scientific Officer for Piedmont Healthcare.  "I cannot think of a person more deserving of this very prestigious honor."

An interventional cardiologist, Dr. Blincoe has held a variety of clinical, governance and leadership positions at Piedmont Hospital and Piedmont Heart Institute over the past 40 years. In his current role, he supports over 1000 physicians and 600 advanced practice providers.

Dr. Blincoe is well known for starting a cardiology fellowship in 1982 at Emory under Dr. J. Willis Hurst. The fellowship program was one of the largest in the nation at the time with over 50 fellows. A truly exciting time to be “in training” with the advent of coronary angioplasty and other cardiovascular advances in the early 1980’s. Dr. Blincoe joined a small cardiology practice based at Piedmont in 1985. Over time this group grew, morphed and merged with the culmination of the development of the Piedmont Heart Institute in 2007. He practiced general and interventional cardiology from the outset but retired from the cath lab in 2017.

“I am truly humbled to received this honor and recognition,” said Dr. Blincoe. “My passion is to make a positive difference for my patients and colleagues.”

Dr. Blincoe received his bachelor's degree from Northwestern University in Illinois, and his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He completed his first two years of residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center, and his last year at Emory in Atlanta.

The Georgia ACC Chapter has presented a lifetime achievement award each year since 2002 to honor recipients that have dedicated their lives to treating cardiovascular disease.
