Schexnyder family

A mother's love

The last several months has been difficult for the Schexnyder family.

“My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer on September 11th,” says Sofi Schexnyder.  “She ran upstairs and said, ‘Sofi, it’s cancer. We’re going to get through this.’ I said, ‘It’s going to be ok. You’re strong.’”

“Her positivity helped,” says Clare Schexnyder.  “She set the tone for how we were going to fight this. And on October 30th, I had reconstructive surgery and a double mastectomy.”

But in December, the Schexnyders were dealt another blow as Clare’s mother was diagnosed with brain cancer.

“I got the diagnosis of brain cancer on December 16th, which was a bummer of a Christmas present,” says Veronica Nicholas, Clare’s mom.

And in January, the unthinkable happened - Sofi suffered a ruptured appendix.

Tears and cheers

Though it’s difficult, the Schexnyders have found strength and support in one another.

“The time we’ve spent together has been precious,” Clare says. “My parents moved in and have lived with us for the last four months while my mother received treatment for her brain cancer.”

Though the healing process takes time, the Schexnyders are appreciative of every moment they spend together.

“Anybody’s life can change in a moment,” Veronica says. “You never know what’s going to happen. So, you should take advantage of the time that you have and celebrate the day.”
