COVID-19 Updated Vaccine

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have approved updated vaccines for the Fall 2023 season.

  • Adults 18 years and older with the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna or Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccines should receive an updated vaccine at least 5 months from completion of your last Covid-19 dose.
  • Also, the following updated vaccines are approved for those 12 years and older: Moderna, Pfizer, and Novavax.
  • The following updated vaccines are authorized for ages 6 months to 11 years of age: Moderna and Pfizer.

If You Received Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna or or Johnson’s Janssen

If you are 18 years or older, you may choose which COVID-19 vaccine you receive as an updated vaccine, the CDC says. Some people may prefer the vaccine type that they originally received, and others may prefer to get a different updated vaccine. CDC’s recommendations now allow for this type of mix and match dosing for updated Covid-19 vaccines. Although you will not be able to receive the Johnson and Johnson vaccine as an option for an updated vaccine, the Novavax vaccine option is available for everyone, and is not a mRNA vaccine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is an updated vaccine needed?

Data has shown that COVID-19 vaccines may lose some of their effectiveness over time. Updated vaccines provide additional, longer-lasting immunity. Moderna, Pfizer, and Novavax have updated vaccines approved for those 12 years and older.

Can I mix and match the types of Covid-19 vaccines?

Yes. Currently, the CDC recommends either of the approved updated vaccines (either Pfizer or Moderna) to which you have access. Mixing and matching is allowed. You may not receive the original vaccine formulation as an updated vaccine if you are 12 years of age or older.

Is there a difference between the first two shots and the updated vaccine?

Any of the 3 approved Covid-19 vaccines can be used as the updated vaccine for this season and can be mixed and  matched with previous doses including those who received Johnson and Johnson. Novavax, Moderna, and Pfizer can all be used as an updated vaccine, regardless of what was received for any earlier doses.

Where can I go to receive an updated vaccine?

Pharmacies, doctor’s offices, Urgent Care centers.

Will the updated vaccine cost anything?

No. Currently, the updated vaccine, like the COVID-19 vaccine, will not cost anything. This is subject to change based on the determination of the US Government.
