PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital
Postgraduate Year 1 (PGY-1) residency programs build upon a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to develop clinical pharmacists with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to assume the responsibility of complex medication-related care. Residents who successfully complete the PGY1 residency program at Piedmont Atlanta will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education; be prepared to provide patient care, and seek board certification in pharmacotherapy; and pursue advanced education and training opportunities postgraduate year two (PGY-2) residencies. The PGY1 residency program is accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) and is structured to maintain accreditation by following the standards set forth by ASHP. The residency program starts with hospital orientation in mid-late June.
PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program Outcomes
The PGY-1 pharmacy residency strives to provide high-quality didactic and clinical experiences essential for the development of a well-rounded and competent clinical pharmacist.
As a Piedmont pharmacy resident, you will:
- Manage and enhance the medication-use process
- Provide evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy management with interdisciplinary teams
- Exercise leadership and practice management skills
- Demonstrate project management capabilities
- Provide medication and practice-related education and training to patients, hospital staff and students
- Exhibit additional competencies that contribute to working successfully in the healthcare environment
- Develop teaching skills by participating in precepting of pharmacy students
Residents will work closely with preceptors, highly qualified pharmacists, physicians and other healthcare professionals.

A. Required Learning Experiences

PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Criteria
- Licensed or eligible for licensure in the State of Georgia
- Graduate of an ACPE-accredited school of Pharmacy
- Doctor of Pharmacy degree is required
- Current registration with ASHP Matching Program
- Clear criminal background check
- Clear health screen
Note: All residents are encouraged to sit for the Georgia Board of Pharmacy exams by mid-June. All residents must be licensed in the state of Georgia within 90 days of starting the residency program.
Submission of Application Materials
- All applicants must register with PhORCAS and complete the application process. You will be asked to provide the following:
- Current Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Letter of intent
- Official pharmacy school transcripts
- Three professional references
A minimum of two references must be from individuals who can speak to clinical problem-solving in direct patient care experiences.
- An in-person/virtual interview is required.
- Applications are due by January 5 of the year you wish to begin the program.
- Residents must have legal clearance to work in the U.S. through citizenship, permanent resident status or a work visa that extends through the end of the residency program. Piedmont Healthcare is unable to sponsor visa applications for pharmacy residents.
